How to request an audit of your compression system

By Germana Falcone

For a company, especially in the manufacturing sector, correctly assessing the costs/benefits of its energy efficiency is now a matter of primary importance. And much of the energy expenditure inevitably passes through the compressed air network. How can you achieve energy savings without sacrificing productivity? Riem Italy offers all its forty years of experience to provide audits of your company’s compression system, thanks to certified and tested systems.  In this article, we will try to understand, in broad terms, what an audit consists of and what corrective measures can be applied to improve the energy efficiency of your facility’s systems.

What is a compression system audit?

First of all, there is a big difference between an “audit” and an “evaluation” of a compressor. The difference may seem minimal, but it is actually very important: an evaluation is more of a complementary activity that concerns a single compressor, while an audit is an in-depth analysis that can take weeks to complete.

Why is it important to conduct a compressed air audit?

If you think a compressed air audit is too expensive, focus on the benefits it brings:

  • reduction in energy costs
  • overall improvement in production

And of the two points, the most important is definitely the second. Optimizing production means achieving positive results in terms of the bottom line: it can be said without hesitation that auditing your company’s compression system is a good investment.

You need an assessment if…

If your company’s needs do not necessarily correspond to the two points above, you probably need a simple “assessment.” The assessment, also known as a compliance assessment, helps you better understand where your compression network stands. It is a quick operation, mostly visual, and does not require any special hardware to perform. In particular, inspections are carried out on compressors, dryers, filters, drains, pipes, and the general configuration. The result of an assessment helps you understand if there are any configuration errors or leaks and helps you understand which pressure setting is best. Finally, it is through the assessment that you can understand whether or not a more comprehensive audit is necessary.

You need an audit if…

If the assessment reveals substantial problems with the compression network, a more in-depth audit may be necessary. Very often, the audit becomes necessary, especially in the area of data recording. As we have said, no special software or hardware is used in the assessment, which is why we refer to it as a “complementary” activity. In an audit, on the other hand, actual recorders are used, designed to provide a snapshot of compressed air usage within a network. These recorders are connected to the compressor network for 7 to 14 days in order to record trends and fluctuations in demand/response. With the data in hand, it will be possible to understand how to correctly size an air compressor for current needs.

Furthermore, the audit will make it possible to identify any leaks and take immediate action.
